Lecture 2: Prevention of Contagious Diseases

This lecture explained how to prevent contagious diseases, which are illnesses that spread easily from one person to another through germs, like the common cold or flu. Students learned the importance of stopping germs to keep themselves and others healthy. The five main prevention methods discussed were: washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, coughing or sneezing into the elbow (vampire cough) or a tissue, staying home when sick, avoiding touching the face, and not sharing personal items like food or drinks. The lesson also covered wearing masks as a “shield” to block germs and protect both the wearer and others, with tips on proper fit and use. Vaccination was explained as a way to train the body’s immune cells—its germ-fighting army—to recognize and fight germs using antibodies, helping prevent illness before it starts. The lecture emphasized that vaccines are safe, tested, and protect communities through herd immunity. Key terms included: contagious diseases, germs, handwashing, vampire cough, mask, antibodies, immune cells, vaccine, herd immunity, and shield.
