Science: Class 4: Chapter 6

Lecture 2: Gravity

Force is a push or pull that can start, stop, or change the direction of an object’s motion. Motion occurs when an object moves from one place to another, while rest means no change in position. Gravity pulls objects toward the Earth, and friction opposes motion, slowing things down. Balanced forces cancel each other out, causing no movement, while unbalanced forces cause motion in the direction of the greater force. Examples include pushing a toy car, kicking a ball, and opening a door. The relationship between force and motion is that force is necessary to change an object’s state of motion—whether starting, stopping, or altering its speed and direction.
