Lecture 1: Earth and its Resources

Earth is our home and provides us with natural resources necessary for life. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water, mostly in oceans, while 29% is land, with around 11% of that land cultivated. Air surrounds the Earth and is made up of gases like nitrogen and oxygen, and it is present everywhere, even in soil and water. Water on Earth exists in many forms such as oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, streams, and glaciers. Understanding these resources helps us appreciate the Earth’s physical characteristics and how vital they are to all living things.
