Science: Class 4: Chapter 9: Solar System and Our Earth

Lecture 1: The Solar System

The solar system is a collection of celestial bodies, including the Sun, eight planets, dwarf planets like Pluto, moons, asteroids, and comets, all bound together by the Sun’s gravity. The Sun, a star at the center, provides light and heat essential for life on Earth. The planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—move in circular paths called orbits, each at different distances from the Sun. Mercury is the smallest and closest to the Sun, while Jupiter is the largest. The solar system also contains natural satellites, such as Earth’s Moon, and other small objects. The order of planets can be remembered by the phrase “My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming.” Understanding the solar system helps us learn about the sizes, distances, and unique features of each planet and their relationship with the Sun.
